Omastar is a dual-type Rock/Water Fossil Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It evolves from Omanyte starting at level 40, after being revived from a Helix Fossil. This prehistoric Pokémon resembles an ammonite, with a sky blue body featuring several tentacles and a pale yellow, helix-spiraled shell on its back. Omastar's shell is lined with sharp spikes, and its eyes have yellow sclerae with vertically-slit pupils. It possesses an oval mouth with a four-sectioned, fang-like beak capable of crushing through rocks.

Interestingly, Omastar is believed to have gone extinct due to the increasing weight of its shell, which severely impacted its mobility and hunting abilities. This ancient predator used its tentacles to ensnare prey before biting down with its powerful beak. Omastar was known to prey on prehistoric Shellder but was itself hunted by Carracosta. Some researchers speculate that Omastar may be a distant ancestor to the modern-day Octillery.

Pokédex Entries Across Versions

  • Red/Blue: A prehistoric Pokémon that died out when its heavy shell made it impossible to catch prey.
  • Yellow: Sharp beaks ring its mouth. Its shell was too big for it to move freely, so it became extinct.
  • Gold: Apparently, it cracked Shellder's shell with its sharp fangs and sucked out the insides.
  • Ruby/Sapphire: Omastar uses its tentacles to capture its prey. It is believed to have become extinct because its shell grew too large and heavy, causing its movements to become too slow and ponderous.
  • Sword: Weighed down by a large and heavy shell, Omastar couldn't move very fast. Some say it went extinct because it was unable to catch food.

Habits

Omastar was a marine predator that used its tentacles to capture prey. It would only attack when prey came within reach of its tentacles. Once it ensnared its target, Omastar would use its powerful beak to crush through the prey's defenses, even breaking through rocks if necessary.
